Encourage your customers to pay by bank
If your trade customers pay with business and corporate cards, you are paying the most expensive fees there are. Pay by Bank is considerably cheaper and carries no card scheme fees. This guide switches it on, puts it in front of the right customers and shows you what you would keep.
Why it pays to move trade customers to bank
Business and corporate cards are the most expensive way to get paid. The card schemes charge more for them than for consumer cards, and the fee grows with the order value, so the large repeat orders a trade account places are exactly the ones that cost you most.
With Pay by Bank the customer approves the payment in their own banking app. The money settles into your Brippo balance like a card payment, the order moves through the same statuses, and because no card scheme is involved there are no card scheme fees and no card scheme chargebacks.
Business and corporate cards
Scheme fees on top of processing, growing with the order value.
Consumer cards
Lower scheme fees, but still a percentage of every order.
Pay by Bank
Considerably cheaper than business cards. No card scheme fees.
- ✓Approved in the banking app. The customer picks their bank at checkout, confirms in the app they already use, and comes back to your store. No card details to type or store.
- ✓Settles like a card payment. The payment lands in your Brippo balance and the order is set to Processing, the same as a card order, so nothing changes for your fulfilment or accounting.
- ✓No card scheme chargebacks. A bank transfer approved by the customer cannot be disputed through a card scheme, so the dispute fees and evidence work described under Managing Disputes do not apply.
Switch it on
Two switches: one in your Brippo dashboard so the method is available, one in Magento so it appears at checkout, above the card options.
- 1
Enable Pay by Bank in the Brippo dashboard
In the Brippo dashboard go to Settings → Payment Methods and turn on Pay by Bank. If you do not see it there, ask support to enable it on your account.
Nothing else changes — cards, wallets and every other method you have on stay exactly as they are. Pay by Bank is added alongside them. - 2
Add the Checkout (Standalone) method in Magento 2
The Brippo Payments extension offers Pay by Bank as its own payment method at checkout, so the customer sees it as a clear choice rather than a tab inside the card form. Go to Stores → Configuration → Sales → Payment Methods → Brippo Payments → Checkout (Standalone) and set:
- Enabled: Yes.
- Payment method: Pay by Bank.
- Title: what the customer sees, for example Pay by Bank – no card needed.
- Sort order: 1, so it appears above the card methods.
Save and flush the configuration cache. At checkout, Pay by Bank now sits at the top of the payment method list.
Give customers a reason to switch
Putting Pay by Bank first helps, but a customer who has always paid by card needs a nudge the first time. The extension can offer a discount for choosing it, and repeat it on later orders so the habit sticks.
- 3
Set up a Payment Method Promotion
In the same configuration group, expand Payment Method Promotion and set:
- Payment method: Pay by Bank.
- First-order discount: the discount for the first order a customer pays by bank. Make it worth noticing: this is the one that changes the habit.
- Repeat-order discount: a smaller discount on every later order paid by bank. Keep it below what the switch saves you and the promotion pays for itself.
- Minimum order total: the promotion only applies to orders above this amount, so small consumer orders are not discounted.
The discount is shown as a badge next to the payment method at checkout and applied when the customer selects it. There is no voucher code to type, nothing for you to send and nothing for the customer to remember.
Sizing the discount — the Brippo overview shows what a business-card order costs you and what the same order would cost by bank (see below). A repeat discount that stays under that difference leaves you ahead on every order.
Re-orders by phone or email
Trade customers often re-order by phone or by replying to an email, and those orders usually end up keyed in on a business card. Send a Brippo Pay by Link instead: create the link from the Magento order or the Brippo Portal, send it by email or SMS, and the customer approves the payment in their banking app in the same two taps as at checkout.
- ✓From the Magento backend: open the order and use Pay by Link to send it. See the Magento Backend user guide.
- ✓From the Brippo Portal: create a link for any amount and send it to the customer's email. See the Brippo Portal user guide.
- ✓Not set up yet? Start with the Pay by Link overview and its configuration page.
- ✓Keyed-in card details go away. No card number read out over the phone, no MOTO handling, nothing to store. The compliance side is covered under Keyed-in MOTO & PCI Compliance.
Tell trade accounts once
Most customers never look at the payment method list. One line in the places they do read is enough, and the promotion badge does the rest at checkout. Add it to the order confirmation email and to the customer account page in your store:
To edit the confirmation email in Magento, go to Marketing → Email Templates, load the order confirmation template and add the line under the order summary. The line works with or without the promotion; if you have set one up, mention the discount.
See what you would keep
The Overview in your Brippo dashboard has a Pay by Bank section. It adds up the fees you paid on business and corporate cards over the last 90 days and prices the same orders at your Pay by Bank rate, so the difference is what those orders would have left in your account. It also lists the repeat customers still paying by business card, which is the shortest list of people to talk to.
- ✓Fees on business cards, last 90 days: what Brippo charged you on those orders, after adjustments and corrections.
- ✓The same orders by bank: each order repriced at your Pay by Bank rate, and the saving between the two.
- ✓Who moved and who did not: customers who now pay by bank, and repeat business-card customers you have not reached yet.
